CRITICAL CONTROL THAT
MUST WORK – EVERY TIME

Rigshospitalet
Copenhagen.

With more than 1.100 beds, Rigshospitalet is the largest hospital in Denmark and has responsibility for 65.000 yearly inpatients and approximately 420.000 ambulant visits annually.

It is by far the most specialized hospital in Denmark with more than 8.000 employees. The Royal Frederiks Hospital was closed in 1910 and the foundation of Rigshospitalet was a reality the same year. In the new North Wing at Rigshospitalet, surgical teams perform procedures where reliability is not optional. Operating rooms must respond instantly and consistently, even under extreme pressure. To achieve this, the hospital required a room automation solution that brings together lighting, climate control, air pressure, ventilation, shading, alarms, and equipment interfaces into one unified and intuitive system.

LOYTEC technology, implemented and customized by GH Connect, delivers this functionality with precision and stability.

THE SOLUTION.

Design Philosophy

The architectural vision for the North Wing was to create a building that supports recovery and promotes a calm, human-centered environment. At the same time, the clinical space needed to be highly flexible, enabling operating rooms to be adapted quickly to different procedures and workflows.

Key requirements included:

  • A single point of control for core room functions.

  • Clear and intuitive interfaces, usable in high-pressure situations.

  • Stable and resilient technology, operating continuously 24/7.

  • Modular flexibility, enabling room configurations to evolve over time.

Solution

GH Connect developed a comprehensive room control concept using LOYTEC’s open, programmable, and integrative automation platform.

Standard off-the-shelf control systems were not sufficient. A tailored solution was required.

Components

L-INX Automation Servers (LINX-153 / LINX-154): Central room logic, interoperability via BACnet/IP, and hosting of custom graphical pages.

DALI-based lighting control: Precise, adjustable surgical lighting including task zones and variable color temperatures.

L-WEB BMS / L-VIS Touch Control Panels: Unified user interface for lighting, airflow, climate, and shading – optimized for fast operation under pressure.

Integration of ventilation, pressure control, temperature sensors, and blinds: Ensures air safety, comfort, and controlled surgical environments.

The complete system enables staff to adjust critical environmental conditions without leaving the patient and without navigating through complex menus. The graphical interface is designed for clarity, minimizing cognitive load and reducing training requirements across operating theaters.

Results .

  • Reliable 24/7 operation in critical healthcare environments.

  • Unified control interface reduces errors and speeds up workflow.

  • Faster room reconfiguration for different surgical procedures.

  • Consistent user experience across multiple operating suites.

  • Future-proof automation platform that can be expanded and adapted.

Benefits.

The implementation of LOYTEC controllers streamlined operations in the hospital’s surgical environments, saving time and reducing reliance on highly skilled technicians for basic system adjustments. Nurses and surgeons can now control critical room functions like lighting, suction, temperature, and more, all from an intuitive touch screen interface.

This increased operational efficiency during surgeries and improved overall staff productivity. The controllers’ ability to seamlessly integrate different communication protocols and systems, including non-standard ones, made them ideal for this complex environment.

Conclusion.

The North Wing at Rigshospitalet demonstrates how technology can support people when it matters most.

By combining LOYTEC’s open automation platform with GH Connect’s domain expertise, the hospital has gained an environment that is calm, safe, and ready for the unexpected. The result is a modern operating theater where the building adapts to the medical team – not the other way around.
