LOYTEC REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
IN BUILDING AUTOMATION

Dachstein Glacier Lift Mountain station.

At an altitude of 2.700 meters, where oxygen is scarce and temperatures plunge well below zero, the Dachstein glacier lift Mountain Station stands as a striking example of what can be achieved when advanced building automation meets one of the most extreme construction environments in Europe. Serving as a key hub for tourism in the Dachstein region, this facility includes a mountain cable car station and a high-altitude restaurant—both requiring reliable, energy-efficient infrastructure capable of handling rapid and extreme weather changes.

With a vision for sustainable and intelligent building operation, one of Austria’s leading tourist companies commissioned a building automation system that would ensure high energy performance, robust functionality, and consistent comfort for visitors and staff alike.

LOYTEC in partnership with the system integrator WaKaTECH GmbH and planning firm Pechmann GmbH, delivered a tailor-made solution that thrives in these unique alpine conditions.

THE CHALLENGES

Severe temperature fluctuations: Require precise and adaptive control strategies.

Extreme conditions: Systems must operate reliably in cold, wind, and humidity.

System integration: Smooth communication via BACnet and Modbus is critical.

The Solution.

LOYTEC provided a comprehensive building automation solution designed specifically for resilience, adaptability, and long-term efficiency. At the heart of the system are the LINX-153 and LINX-215 Automation Servers, coordinating all building control functions. These are supported by a distributed architecture of I/O modules—eight LIOB-101, five LIOB-102, three LIOB-103, and one LIOB-110—ensuring decentralized control and real-time data acquisition across all technical systems.

The automation system covers critical infrastructure such as ventilation, heating, and domestic hot water systems. These functions are seamlessly integrated through open protocols, with BACnet managing the complete control network and Modbus enabling reliable communication with external systems, such as the Danfoss hot water stations. This flexibility and openness allow the system to respond dynamically to operational needs while remaining compatible with future upgrades or integrations.

A particular focus was placed on compensating for the extreme external temperature fluctuations common at such high altitudes. LOYTEC’s intelligent control strategies ensure indoor temperatures remain stable, automatically adjusting in real-time to the ever-changing weather conditions outside. This level of environmental responsiveness is crucial for maintaining comfort and operational stability in such a volatile setting.

Benefits.

The LOYTEC system has delivered exceptional performance from day one. Most notably, it maintains stable indoor conditions despite the dramatic and frequent shifts in external temperature and wind exposure. Visitors and staff enjoy consistent thermal comfort, which is critical in a high-altitude tourist destination that operates year-round.

Equally important is the system’s energy efficiency. By using real-time environmental data to optimize HVAC and hot water operations, the system reduces unnecessary energy consumption without compromising performance. This not only aligns with the operator’s sustainability goals but also ensures long-term cost savings.

The modularity and reliability of LOYTEC hardware made it particularly well-suited for a project of this magnitude and complexity. Its ability to perform in harsh climates, while still offering fine-tuned control and adaptability, made it the ideal choice for this one-of-a-kind alpine facility.

Conclusion.

The project at the Dachstein Glacier Lift Mountain station is far more than just a technical implementation. It is a flagship project showcasing what modern building automation can achieve in one of the most challenging construction environments in the world. As one of the highest operational sites in Austria, this project demanded the utmost precision, resilience, and technological expertise. With its flexible and future-proof automation platform, LOYTEC not only met all requirements but also set new standards in intelligent control, energy efficiency, and system security. In an environment where few systems could operate, LOYTEC demonstrates how modern building automation delivers top performance even under extreme conditions, day after day, at over 2.700 meters above sea level.
